Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex chimney caps fit three main series: the standard DuraFlex SW (smooth wall) for 3″ to 8″ diameter liners, the DuraFlex TW (twisted wall) in the same range, and the heavier DuraFlex Pro series used on most inserts installed after 2010. The part number is stamped on the underside of the existing cap flange, but if corrosion has eaten that away, measure the inner liner diameter with a tape measure, not the outer collar. A 6″ liner takes a 6″ cap, no fudge factor.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see most in Roanoke: the DuraFlex Pro cap looks identical to the SW cap from the roofline, but the mounting tabs sit 3/8″ wider. Force the wrong cap and you’ll oval the liner collar. We carry both OEM DuraFlex caps and the Gelco equivalent, which matches spec and carries the same stainless warranty at a lower parts cost. Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust-colored streaks on the chimney brick or siding. The 304 stainless mesh on most DuraFlex caps holds up well, but the spot-welded seams at the corner joints are where Roanoke’s freeze-thaw cycles do their damage. Once water gets behind the seam, it wicks down the flue wall and leaves those telltale stains.
• Water in the firebox after a hard rain, especially a driving southwest storm. The cap’s overhang should deflect water at a 45-degree angle. If the mesh is sagging or the lid has shifted in wind gusts common to the Grandin Road corridor, water finds the gap and runs straight down.
• Birds or squirrels audible in the flue, or nesting debris falling into the firebox. DuraFlex mesh is 5/8″ grid, which stops most animals unless a corner has rusted through or a tab has snapped off. In Roanoke, we see this most on caps installed before 2015, when the tab design was thinner.
• Smoke backing up into the room on startup. The mesh can clog with creosote, especially if you’ve been burning unseasoned oak or pine. A DuraFlex cap in good condition has enough free airflow for the mesh to stay clear between annual sweeps. If it’s clogging mid-season, the mesh may be partially collapsed inward.
• The cap is visibly tilted or missing entirely after a wind event. DuraFlex caps use a stainless band clamp with a turnbuckle tightener. The 2009-2014 clamps had a narrower band profile that loosens under repeated thermal cycling. We’ve replaced dozens on homes along Franklin Road and in South Roanoke where the cap walked off in a March gust.
