Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco builds caps across several product lines, and the right match depends on what’s sitting on your flue right now. The most common we see in Roanoke are the standard galvanized single-flue caps, the stainless-steel multi-flue models, and the wind-directional Vacu-Stack series that older homes in Windsor Hills and South Roanoke seem to collect. Check the underside of your existing cap for a stamped model number, or measure the flue tile opening - width, depth, and whether it’s square, rectangular, or round. The collar height matters too; a cap made for a 9-inch extended flue won’t seat right on a flush mount.
We’re independent of Famco, so we source both OEM caps and quality aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Copperfield when the original spec has been discontinued. The aftermarket route saves some homeowners forty to sixty dollars without giving up stainless construction or proper mesh sizing. Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing
- Rust stains running down the brickwork below the cap. Galvanized steel caps in Roanoke’s wet shoulder seasons - especially with our freeze-thaw cycles - develop pinholes at the seams first. Once water gets under the finish, it travels fast.
- Mesh sides clogged with creosote or animal nesting. Famco’s standard spark arrestor mesh is 5/8-inch, which catches debris but also traps it. A clogged mesh chokes draft and pushes smoke back into the house.
- Cap sitting crooked or gaps visible between cap and flue tile. The mounting brackets fatigue over time, especially if the original installer overtightened them. Gaps let rain pour straight onto your smoke shelf.
- Water in the firebox or white efflorescence on interior firebrick. This means the cap has already failed as a water barrier. In Roanoke’s humidity, that moisture never really dries out between storms.
- No cap visible at all after a windstorm. Famco’s lighter galvanized units can lift off if the mounting screws pull from deteriorating flue tile. We find them in azalea bushes more often than you’d think.

DIY or Call Us?
There’s no high-tension spring or electrical hazard on a chimney cap, but there’s also no good way to inspect the flue tile and crown condition from the ground. An owner can safely check from inside: shine a flashlight up the flue and look for daylight gaps, water stains, or debris that shouldn’t be there. What you can’t see is whether the flue tile lip is cracked underneath the mounting brackets - and driving screws into cracked tile turns a cap replacement into a liner conversation.
