There’s a safe middle ground here. You can inspect the handle and linkage from the firebox with a flashlight. If the cotter pin is missing and the handle arm is dangling, that’s useful information to relay when you call. You can also measure the throat opening width and height - write it down.

What you should not do: attempt to remove a stuck cast-iron plate with leverage tools. The plate weighs 15-25 pounds and sits above your head in a confined space.
