The cast-iron units carry model prefixes like GDV and GDC, with throat widths from 8 inches to 13 inches. The critical measurement is the throat opening, not the firebox width. A homeowner measuring 30 inches across the fireplace and ordering a 30-inch damper will end up with a part that won’t seat.

Top-sealing Gelco dampers, the GVS series, mount at the flue tile and use a cable or chain running down to a handle assembly. These are model-specific to flue diameter. A 13×13 flue tile takes a different gasket and frame than a 12×12, and the difference is not forgiving.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin has corroded through or the cotter pin has worked loose. In Roanoke, with humidity that swings from 85% in July to dry winter heating seasons, this is the most common failure we see on 20-plus-year-old Gelco units.
