HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Roanoke Owner’s Guide

HeatShield chimney cap installation in Roanoke typically runs $340-$620 depending on flue size, existing crown condition, and whether we need to adapt the mounting base to your current setup. We stock HeatShield-compatible caps and mounting hardware on every truck, and most installs are completed in a single visit. A clean chimney doesn’t announce itself. Neither does a problem - until it does.

Most Roanoke homeowners realize their chimney cap is failing after a storm rolls through the Roanoke Valley and they spot water stains on the firebox wall, or they climb up to clear autumn leaves and find the cap sitting crooked, rusted through at the corners, or missing entirely. The Blue Ridge winters finish off what our wet springs start.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield caps mount to two distinct systems, and mixing them up wastes a morning and a trip to the supplier. The HeatShield Cerfractory Flue system uses a stainless band-clamp mount sized to the relined flue diameter, typically 6″, 7″, or 8″. The HeatShield Pro series, more common on Roanoke homes built between 1995 and 2010, uses a top-sealing damper-integrated cap with a specific 13″ × 13″ or 14″ × 14″ base flange. Check the stamp on your existing cap’s skirt or the relining paperwork from your last sweep.

We carry both OEM HeatShield hardware and Gelco stainless equivalents that match the mounting geometry without the brand markup. For most Roanoke installations, the Gelco 304 stainless cap outlasts the original in our climate - we’ve tracked them on Grandin Road homes for 18 years without perforation. If your flue was relined with DuraFlex or Olympia Chimney products, the band spacing differs by 3/8″. We measure before we quote. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks down the chimney face. HeatShield caps use 430 stainless in older production runs, and the salt in Roanoke’s winter road treatments accelerates pitting at the weld seams. Once you see orange runoff, the cap’s structural integrity is compromised.
  • Mesh sides pulled away from the frame. Squirrels in the Wasena and Raleigh Court neighborhoods treat loose mesh like a door. The underlying cause is usually galvanic corrosion at the spot-welds, not animal aggression.
  • Cap shifted or tilted after wind. The mounting band has loosened, or the crown surface underneath has eroded. Either way, the cap no longer sheds water to the outside edge of the crown.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. A cap that looks fine from the ground can have a cracked or missing rain skirt, or the damper mechanism in Pro-series caps may be stuck open. Water finds the gap.
  • Draft problems or smoke backup on startup. The cap’s internal baffle or wind-directional hood has corroded out. In Roanoke’s valley location, prevailing southwest winds exaggerate any cap deficiency.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range
Standard cap swap, sound crown, band-clamp mount $340-$420
Cap plus crown resurfacing (minor) $480-$580
Pro-series damper-integrated cap, full assembly $520-$620
Custom chase cover adaptation (prefab chimney) $580-$720

What drives the range: flue diameter, whether we need to fabricate a transition piece, and crown condition. Every quote includes the cap, stainless fasteners, high-temp sealant, and disposal of the old unit. We photograph the crown before and after. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing - if it’s not right, we come back, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check whether the cap is loose by sighting up from the firebox with a flashlight, or by binoculars from the ground. Do not climb a wet roof in Roanoke’s shoulder seasons, and do not attempt to tighten a band clamp on a 25-foot flue without proper fall protection. The cap itself is not high-tension, but the location is.

Where DIY goes wrong: improper band tension warps the flue liner; wrong sealant choice fails in the first freeze-thaw cycle; and most importantly, a cap that looks seated can leave a 1/16″ gap that funnels water straight to the crown for three years before anyone notices. We’ve replaced too many DIY installs in South Roanoke where the owner did everything right except the thing they couldn’t see from the ladder.

Call (540) 787-3302 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether your situation needs a truck roll or just a tighter clamp.
