HeatShield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Damper Repair: The Roanoke Owner’s Guide

HeatShield damper repair in Roanoke typically runs $340-$580 installed, depending on whether the throat plate, frame, or full assembly needs replacement. We stock HeatShield-compatible dampers and hardware on our trucks, and most swaps are finished in a single visit. You’ll know the damper has failed when the handle spins freely, the plate won’t seat fully, or you feel a cold draft even with the damper “closed.”

A clean chimney doesn’t announce itself. Neither does a problem - until it does. In Roanoke, we see HeatShield damper failures spike after ice storms and during the first cold snap, when owners light a fire and realize the damper plate is stuck open or the chain has pulled free from its anchor. Russell Haines and our crew have replaced these on bungalows in Wasena, colonials in South Roanoke, and ranchers all along Peters Creek Road. The pattern is consistent: HeatShield builds a solid product, but the cast iron frame and steel plate assembly takes a beating from our freeze-thaw cycles, and the factory gasket compresses flat after about 12-15 years of seasonal heating.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield dampers fall into two main series: the original cast-frame throat dampers (common on pre-2010 installations) and the later stainless-steel pivot models with integrated silicone gaskets. The cast-frame units carry a stamped model number on the frame edge, visible with a flashlight and a mirror. The pivot models have a laser-etched code on the handle bracket. If you can’t read it, measure the frame opening: 13×13, 13×17, and 17×17 are the three standard HeatShield sizes, but there’s a gotcha - the 13×17 cast-frame uses a left-hand pivot pin, while the stainless pivot model uses a centered pin. Order wrong and the plate hangs crooked or won’t seal.

We carry both OEM HeatShield replacement assemblies and quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney. For the cast-frame units, we typically recommend the OEM frame-and-plate kit because the pivot geometry is proprietary. For the stainless pivot series, the Gelco equivalent seals just as well and costs less, though we always ask first. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield, so we have no incentive to push one source over another. Our only interest is a damper that seats flat and stays seated.

Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The pivot pin has corroded through or the linkage inside the frame has snapped. This is the most common failure we see in Roanoke’s older homes, especially where the chimney has taken water through a cracked crown.
  • Cold air pours down the flue even with the damper “closed.” The gasket has compressed or the plate has warped from overheating. A warped cast-iron plate won’t mate flush with the frame no matter how hard you crank the handle.
  • The plate is stuck open and won’t budge. Creosote has glued the plate to the frame, or rust has seized the pivot. We see this in Roanoke homes that burn unseasoned oak or skip annual sweeps.
  • The chain or cable hangs loose from the handle. The anchor bolt inside the firebox has pulled out of the masonry, or the S-hook has corroded through. Simple to diagnose, but the repair means working inside the throat where visibility is poor.
  • You smell smoke in the room during a fire. The damper isn’t opening fully, or it’s partially obstructed by a detached plate. This one we take seriously - incomplete draft means smoke and carbon monoxide can spill into living space.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
HeatShield damper plate replacement (gasketed plate only) $340-$420
Full frame-and-plate assembly, cast iron $480-$580
Stainless pivot model, complete $520-$580
Firebox anchor repair (chain/cable reattachment) $180-$260

These are installed prices for Roanoke-area homes with standard masonry fireplaces and clear roofline access. Steep pitches, buried frames behind custom surrounds, or discovery of water damage to the smoke chamber can push the upper bound. We quote upfront before any work begins, and the number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every damper replacement includes a Level-2 camera inspection of the flue above, photos you can see, and a plain-English verdict on whether anything else needs attention now or can wait. All work carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise - in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things an owner can safely check: verify the chain is still attached to the handle, shine a flashlight up the flue to see if the plate is present (not fallen into the firebox), and confirm the handle mount isn’t obviously loose. Beyond that, we recommend against DIY. The damper sits in the smoke chamber throat, 18-24 inches above the firebox floor, in a space too tight for shoulders and too dark for untrained eyes. The cast-iron frame is heavy and brittle; drop it and it shatters, or worse, it drops on you. If the frame is rust-welded to the masonry, prying it free can crack the surrounding throat or dislodge mortar into the flue. We’ve been called to fix DIY attempts on Grandin Road and in Crystal Spring, and the cleanup always costs more than the original repair would have. Call (540) 787-3302 and we’ll sort it in one visit.
